Reach Urdu speakers across Pakistan, India and the diaspora

Urdu is the national language of Pakistan and one of India's scheduled languages, with well over 200 million speakers once second-language use is counted, plus large communities in the Gulf, the UK and North America. There is a quirk worth knowing if you have already made a Hindi version. Spoken Urdu and spoken Hindi are close enough to be broadly mutually intelligible in everyday registers — they share a grammar and much of a core vocabulary. What differs completely is the script. Urdu is written in a Perso-Arabic script, right to left, while Hindi uses Devanagari, left to right. So the voiceover work may translate across more easily than you expect, while the subtitles are an entirely separate job.

Everything your Urdu version needs

Key Features for Pictory AI Video Editor

Urdu voiceovers, including your own voice

Apply your own voice clone to the translated script and the Urdu version is narrated by the same person your audience already knows, speaking Urdu. Or choose from Pictory's library of AI voices that speak Urdu naturally, preview each one against your script, and pick a register that suits a formal training module or a conversational social cut.

Right-to-left subtitles in a script that needs room

Urdu reads right to left, and the script it is traditionally set in — Nastaliq — cascades diagonally downward across a word rather than sitting on a flat baseline. It needs substantially more line height than Arabic-style Naskh, and many tools quietly substitute Naskh because it is far simpler to render. Pictory lets you set maximum lines per caption, adjust size and spacing, and check how your captions actually render before you commit.

Full control over the translation

The translated script is editable text, not a locked output. Fix a product name, adjust formality for a corporate or a general audience, or shorten a line that overruns its scene — then regenerate. Voiceover and captions update around your edit. Apply a brand kit and your Urdu version carries the same logo, colors, fonts and intro as the English original.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I translate a video from English to Urdu?

Upload your English video to Pictory, let it transcribe the audio, translate the transcript into Urdu, then choose a Urdu AI voice and generate matching subtitles. Review the Urdu text before you export, then download the video and subtitle file.

I already have a Hindi version. Do I still need Urdu?

For the audio, less than you might think — spoken Urdu and Hindi are broadly mutually intelligible in everyday registers. For anything on screen, entirely. Urdu is written right to left in a Perso-Arabic script while Hindi uses Devanagari, so subtitles, captions and on-screen text have nothing in common between the two versions.

Will Urdu subtitles render in Nastaliq or Naskh?

That depends on the font available to your caption style. Nastaliq is the script Urdu readers expect and it needs roughly one and a half times the line height of Naskh because letters cascade diagonally. Naskh is flatter, renders more predictably and is easier to read at small sizes, which is why many video tools default to it. Preview both before committing to a batch.

Will the Urdu version keep my own voice?

Yes. Create a voice clone from your own recordings and apply it to the translated script, and the Urdu version is narrated in your voice rather than a stock one. Voice clones are multilingual, so the same clone works across every language you publish in.

How accurate is the English to Urdu translation?

Accuracy is strong when the source audio is clean and clearly paced, and the translation is fully editable before you render. Review the Urdu transcript, correct brand names or technical terms, and the voiceover and captions regenerate around your edits.

Can I translate a Urdu video back into English?

Yes — the workflow runs in both directions from the same upload. Pictory transcribes the Urdu audio, translates it to English, and generates an English voiceover and subtitles the same way.
